Part D : Conservation efforts at Jurong Lake Park / Conclusion

Jurong Lake Park is one of the most peaceful places in Singapore so all of us must conserve it. What is conserve? To conserve means to save. Like how we save water at home, for example, turn of the tap at all times when not using. We have to conserve Jurong Lake Park too. One question you would most likely ask now is "How do we conserve?”. Basically, there are many ways to conserve Jurong Lake Park. Two examples I can think of are : 1) Do not disturb the living things and their habitats and 2) You can donate! There was event that is called Jurong Lake Run that is a donate event. People can simply wait for upcoming events too! We have come across some park management officials who are busy with their jobs in the park but they did not let us take a photo of them. But what we did saw was some considerate people helping to throw rubbish that can be found at the park away. We also saw some cleaners. To top it off, I think there is a flower shop and that is good because it may have something to do with conserving the flowers in the park. The authorities are doing their parts in safeguarding the natural environment from what I saw and these efforts are effective. I think that we should all do our part too. Most importantly, try to clear any rubbish that you can see in the park.

Part C --- Conserving efforts at Jurong Lake Park / Conclusion

C) Impact of Man on Jurong Lake Park

                             LITTERING

We saw litters such as plastic bag, papers, wrappers and plastic bottles lying around on the ground and even in the lake and drain. We think that is a very irresponsible way. Park is a public place for all people to relax and gather for some recreational activities. Littering in the lake would lead to the water being contaminated. Water is one of the most essential things that pertain to life for all living things. This polluted water will affect our drinking water quality and it may cause some animals to die when consuming. It will also cause the fishes or living organism in the lake to die. Thus, everyone should do their parts in maintaining the park clean and please throw all rubbish into the dustbin.

                          OIL POLLUTION
We saw these oily and greasy substances on the ground. This oil may be discard by irresponsible person. It will contaminate the land. In addition an oil spill could affect animals in the park. If these are being consumed by animals such as birds, they can become sick or poisoned when they swallow the oil while preening (grooming their feathers or fur).

                            DEFORESTATION

We saw people cutting down trees. Trees are important to the environment. As Singapore is a hot climate country, we need trees to shade the sunlight and to make the environment cooler. Trees are also essential for some animal habitat. Deforestation causes global warming. Please do not cut down trees unnecessarily.

ILLEGAL FISHING

We saw illegal people fishing at Jurong Lake Park too. Even though there is a signboard there to ask people not to fish there, they did not follow the rules and continued. The fishes there may be poisonous too as they live in polluted water and when the fisherman catch a fish, they might get sick after that.

Don't bother about Bryan and Fayyah there!

Part B ---- Grouping & Naming organisms

                                                                 Fungi

                      ALGAE
Scientific name:Pediastrum boryanum

 Algae is a single-celled plant.
There are over 20,000 varieties of algae.
Algae are usually found in marine or freshwater environments.
Algae produces oxygen which is used by other aquatic life.
Algae ia also used at a form of medicine and food by humans
Algae are important in many food chains acting as the primary producer  of organic matter.
In some areas of indian ocean, the sea surface lights up at night. it is so bright that one can read a book.
Algae are used in many wastewater treatment facilities, to reduce the need of harmful chemicals.
Algae are used in some power plants to reduce carbon dioxide emission.

                                  ORGANISM

BUTTERFLY
Scientific Name: Artogeia (Pieris) rapae
There are over 25,000 species of butterflies.
The only continent where butterflies have not been found is Antartica.
After bees, butterflies are the second leading pollinators.
Most butterflies usually only live for 2 to 3 weeks.
Butterflies can only fly if their body temperature is over 86 degrees.
A butterfly's antennas, palps and legs have tiny receptors that are used to smell.
Butterflies can only see red, green and yellow.
Butterflies don't eat, they drink with their proboscis.(straw-like structure)
Butterflies do not have lungs, they breathe through openings in their abdoments called Spiracles.

Worm
  Scientific name: Lumbricus terrestris

Worms are invertebrates. They have a long, soft body and no back bone or legs! They do not have a brain but do have a nerve centre, called a ganglia. They do not have eyes but are sensitive to light. Worms either move by stretching and contracting their muscles or only move using the movement of other creatures. Worms come in all sorts of sizes from tiny little thin things to very big ones. There are hundreds of thousands of species of worms and about 2,700 are earth worms.

Frog
Scientific name: Ranahexadactyla

Frogs absorb water through their skin therefore, they don't need to drink.
Frogs can lay as many as 4,000 eggs in frogspawn.
The eyes and nose of a frog are on top of its head so it can breathe and see when most of its body is under the water.
Frogs have long back legs and webbed feet for jumping and swimming.
Certain frogs can jump up to 20 times their own body length in a single leap.
Frogs usually eat meat (bugs and worms) and swallow their food whole.
The world's biggest frog is the goliath frog from Cameroon in West Africa. Their body can be one-foot long.
The smallest frogs in the world are less than half-an-inch long.
In the Seychelles, there is a male frog that carries its young around on its back until they become adults.
People who study frogs and toads are called herpetologists. Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles.
Frog bones form a new ring every year when the frog is hibernating. Scientists can count these rings to discover the age of the frog.
Amphibians' eyes come in all shapes and sizes. Some even have square or heart shaped pupils. But amphibians don't see colour -- they only see in black or white.
Many of the most brightly coloured tropical frogs are coloured in this way to warn predators that they are poisonous.

                                                           Ants
    Scientific Name:Camponotus pennsylvanicus
    Kingdom:Animalia
    Phylum:Arthropoda
    Class:Insecta
    Order:Hymenoptera
    Suborder:Apocrita
    Superfamily:Vespoidea
    Family:Formicidae
Ants are mostly found in hot climates.Over 10000 known species of ants exist in the world.
The average life span of an ant is 45 to 60 days.
The ant has very strong legs which help it to run very quickly.
Ants appear in shades of green, red, brown, yellow, blue or purple.
An ant is able to lift about 20 times its own body weight.
Adult ants are unable to swallow solid food. They depend on the juice they are able to squeeze out from pieces of food.
An ant uses its antenna for touch as well as smell.
Ants normally range from 2 to 7 mm in length. The carpenter ant is an exception to the rule, as it can stretch to 2 cm, or even an inch.
There is at least one queen in each ant colony.
An ant has two stomachs, in one stomach it stores food for itself and in the other it stores food that is to be shared with other ants.

An ant has the largest brain amongst insects. It is said that the processing power in an ant's brain and a Macintosh II computer might be similar.
Some ants are able to sleep seven hours a day.
Ants are mostly omnivorous, that is, they eat other insects, seeds, oils and bread. Queen ants are provided with wings at birth, they lose these wings after they fly off to start new colonies.

      Snail Eggs
      Scientific Name: Cornu aspersum
      Snails cannot hear.
It is the fastest of all the different species of snails with a top speed of 65 feet an hour.
It is very rare to find a snail whose shell coils to the left.
Snails will die if their shells are removed as their organs will dry out.
In the olden days a broth was made of their mucus and given to treat sore throats.
The act of mating lasts for anywhere between three to eight hours. As we all know garden snails are served up as escargot and May 24th is National Escargot Day.

Part A ----- Introduction to Jurong Lake Park

                                    JURONG LAKE PARK

Jurong Lake is located in the western region of Singapore and is next to the Lakeside MRT Station. It is a 70ha freshwater lake which serves as a reservoir contributing to the water supply of the country. It is surrounded by parkland, which serves as a recreational ground for leisure activities such as cycling, jogging and water activities such as dragon boat and fishing (at destinated place) etc. It is an added entertainment for nearby residents in Jurong East and Jurong West New Towns. It also serves as an extra outdoor learning place for nearby schools such as Jurong Secondary School, Yuan Ching Secondary School and Lakeside Primary School etc.
    (A) Our Reflection

We went to the Jurong Lake Park on 6th July 2012. A refreshing rain had just bathed the earth. The weather was now clear and the first rays of sunshine were starting to peep through the clouds again. The park is beautiful. It is surrounded by tall trees, all kinds of shrubs and flowers with some wooden seats along the way. Besides the large open space for humans to interact with one another, the trees and plants in the park are also important habitat to a lot of animans. We were surprised to see different types of plants such as pong pong tree, coconut trees, bird’s nest fern, rabbit’s foot fern, Chinese fan palm and ixora etc. As we walked along, we saw animals such as frog, kingfisher, squirrel, mynah ,snail eggs and some fishes in the pond. Therefore parks help to contribute to the diversity of plants and animals in Singapore.
